ASME A17.6 (2010)

Standard for Elevator Suspension, Compensation, and Governor Systems

Annotation and contents

A17.6 covers the means and members of suspension, compensation and governor systems for elevators within the scope of ASME A17.1/CSA B44.  This Standard is intended to be used with ASME A17.1/CSA B44, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators; A17.2, Guide for the Inspection of Elevators and Escalators; and A17.3, Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators.  It joins with the other Codes and Standards referenced by these Standards, along with other related Standards, to provide the most comprehensive set of solutions available today for governing elevator systems.

A17.6 includes standards for three technologies for elevator suspension, namely:

• Steel wire ropes
• Aramid fiber ropes
• Non-circular elastomeric coated steel suspension members

Each part of the standard includes the material properties, design, testing, inspection, and replacement criteria for these means.  A17.6 also includes the requirements for these three technologies, and provides direction for future constructions as new technology develops.  Uniform standards for these important items are necessary to ensure consistent levels of safety.

A17.6 is unique in the world in addressing elevator suspension.  It was approved by the ASME Standards Committee for Elevators and Escalators.  It was also approved and designated as an ASME Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on March 17, 2010.

Intended for manufacturers of these suspension/compensation means as well as the designers, manufacturers, installers, maintainers, and inspectors of elevator equipment.
